Ebony Byrom: Fatally shot by husband while on 911 call

Thirty-eight-year-old Ebony Byrom was a loving wife who made a living as a nurse. She doted on her husband, Hal Byrom, who had worked at UPS. The couple shared an immaculate Macomb County, Michigan home.

Their quiet life was interrupted late Friday night on September 30, 2016 when Ebony called 911 to report a domestic fight between her and her husband.

“I just want him to leave before it escalates,” the 38-year-old woman told a Macomb County sheriff’s dispatcher, according to the Detroit Free Press. "I just want him to go... he's being very disrespectful, it's 1 O'clock in the morning," she is heard saying on the tape. "  

When asked what her last name is, she said, "It's Byrom for right now."

The 911 dispatcher listened intently as the woman described the altercation, then suddenly  -- BOOM, BOOM, BOOM -- gunshots. Ebony was shot dead. The husband then turned the gun on himself.

When police arrived both the man and wife were on the floor suffering gunshot wounds. The wife would not survive; the husband was transported to the hospital, where he is fighting for his life and facing murder charges.

A neighbor, who described the family as a regular couple, is stunned at the violent outcome.

“It’s like this beast that came out of nowhere,” Benjamin Virga, a neighbor of the couple, told The Detroit News. “It’s no longer a surprise,” he said. “Gun violence in the country is truly an epidemic.”

A 16-year-old son was inside the home during the shooting. He is unharmed, according to WDIV.

“As soon as he opened his door, he saw his mother and stepfather on the floor,” Sheriff 'Anthony Wickersham said, according to the Free Press. “Our hearts go out to him for being in there, something he had to witness.”
