Twenty-four-year-old Joyce Quaweay's tragic death went viral in August 2016 when law enforcement authorities arrested a former Temple University police officer in her beating death.

Police say Quaweay was beaten to death in front of her children by her boyfriend and another man.

But three months later, Quaweay's former co-workers want her to be more than just another hashtag.

Quaweay worked at SPIN, a Philadelphia nonprofit that provides support for women with intellectual disabilities. On October 19, 2016, hundreds of her former co-workers paid tribute to Quaweay, along with her family, by raising funds for local domestic violence groups.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

“Joyce’s murder devastated our community of caring people,” Kathy Brown-McHale, President and CEO of SPIN, said in a statement provided to Black Girl Tragic. “To honor Joyce’s life, we wanted to raise awareness and understanding about domestic partner violence in the hope it may help other employees, their families and the community we care about.”
