Ashley Oatis was a 25-year-old mother focused on raising her two children. The Mississippi woman lost her life when a gunman(s) shot up the home she was inside in the  middle of the night.

The  drive-by shooting happened in Jefferson Davis County on Zion Hill Church Road,authorities said. The incident has left Oatis' family members devastated and searching for answers. 

Jasmine Mitchell, 25, was shot as well, but is expected to survive, according to sheriff's deputies. Authorities have one person in custody, but no other information has been released.

When deputies arrived at the scene of the shooting around 2 a.m., they found  shell casings scattered about, Sheriff Ron Strickland told KPCTV.

“When they got here, they noticed the shell casings were in the roadway and the house had been shot up," Strickland was quoted as saying. "After doing a further investigation, they noticed one person was injured and one was deceased inside the residence.”

Authorities are still investigating the case and ask that if anyone knows anything to please come forward.
