Porsha Owens was a well-liked school safety officer at Riverview Gardens School District in St. Louis, Missouri.

The 28-year-old mother often thought of the students as her kids, which she had three of at home. So she was caught off-guard Monday morning, June 11, 2018 when a man car rolled up on her outside her Castle Point home about 7 a.m.

Authorities said a gunman attempted to carjack Owens, who was dressed in her uniform, at the exact time she was putting her three children in the car.

Eighteen-year-old  Mark Haywood was charged with second-degree murder in the killing. He appeared seemingly out of nowhere with a gun in hand and demanded, “Give me your money and your car keys," the victim's son told  told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Haywood had his shirt pulled over over his mouth, revealing just his eyes and the top of this head, the boy said.

In front of her children, Haywood fired at Owens twice, striking her once, according to St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch. The victim's children watched horrified as Owens staggered to her feet and tried to make it inside the home. She collapsed in the street.

Owens' grandmother, Fannie King told the Dispatch that Owens' 8-year-old son hurried his younger siblings under the car to hide while he ran for help.

Haywood got away with her gun, keys and purse, McCulloch said.

"I can't imagine anything more horrifying than that," McCulloch said at a news conference. "It's one of the worst scenarios I can imagine or have ever seen in all years that I've been doing this."

Haywood is being held in the county jail on $1 million cash bond. If prosecutors determine the killing was premeditated, his charges could be bumped up to first-degree murder, McCulloch said.

Owens' family has started a GoFundMe page, which has raised $124,000 of a $50,000 goal.
