Brooklyn DeShauna Smith was a 20-year-old transgender woman in the north Louisiana city of Shreveport.

Her body was found inside a west Shreveport, Louisiana apartment around 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2020. She was shot to death, authorities confirmed.

“Investigators are working to determine if gender identification was a factor in her death,” police Sgt. Angie Willhite told the Shreveport Times.

Witnesses and family members were being questioned as to the details surrounding the case, according to media reports.

Although police said that the victim had been shot at least once, an autopsy with the Caddo coroner’s office would divulge more details.
