Joi Kimitra Brown: Virginia Teacher Fatally Shot In Domestic Incident
Joi Kimitra Brown, 45, was a well-loved health and physical education teacher at Kecoughtan High in Hampton, Virginia.
A Hampton City Schools educator since 2019, Brown was remembered by her principal as someone who loved children.
"Joi Brown has been a valued member of the Kecoughtan High School team," Executive Principal Dr. Violet Whiteman said in a written statement. "She has touched countless lives and has been loved by her students, their families, and our staff. We will cherish her memory and the students and staff will miss her greatly."
On Sunday, June 25, 2023, public safety officers responded to a call about a gunshot victim about 7:45 p.m. When they arrived, they found Brown inside a residence suffering from a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Also in the home, was a man suffering from "an unknown injury,” according to the officers. He was rushed to a nearby hospital to be treated for a life-threatening injury.
Police say the incident appears to be domestic in nature.
A neighbor, Jermar James, said he checked on the couple after not hearing form them for a while and found the front door unlocked. James found th man with what appeared to be scratches and a head wound. He called 911 when he found Brown in the home.
“He only said two words to me. He just said, ‘What’s up, bro?’ And I asked him, ‘Where’s Joi at?’ He told me, ‘Downstairs.’ I didn’t see her downstairs and that’s when I went up the stairs and saw her in the bedroom," James said. “His mind just wasn’t there. It was almost like he was in a zombie state. Just gone.”
Blondenia Tarver, who used to work with Brown, described her as a hardworking woman and a better person.
“Joi was a beautiful person she was an entrepreneur and the loss for me is a really bad loss,” Tarver. told WAVY TV.
Tarver also said she knew the injured man. “Heartbroken on both sides because I loved both of them,” Tarver WAVY. “I just can’t believe it, I’m not able to sleep at night because I think about both of them and what happened, and she’s gone. It’s like a bad dream.”
James said Brown was a professional woman who was focused on her career.
“She had a lot of things going for her. She was a school teacher, she got into real estate," James told 13 News Now. "She was ambitious. If she set a goal, she would go for it and she would take it straight on.”
Law enforcement are still investigating the shooting.
