Natalia Cox: 21-Year-Old Austin College Student Gunned Down Inside Apartment

Natalia Monet Cox, 21, a senior biology major at Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas, was shot to death in the early hours of Wednesday, March 31, 2021. Police are investigating the case.

Natalia Monet Cox, 21, was a senior at Huston-Tillotson University, a private HBCU in Austin, Texas. The biology major was on her way to becoming an exotic animal veterinarian, according to HTU.

Cox was well on her way to being a woman of successful woman. She served as president of the Pre-Alumni Council, and was secretary of her chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

She also had a seat on the executive board of Deeds Not Words and held an internship with Texas Parks and Wildlife for two years. 

On March 31, 2021, she was shot to death Inside an apartment complex in the wee hours of the night.

According to local TV station KXAN, Austin police responded to a 911 call in which the caller reported the disturbing sound of somebody’s door being kicked in, multiple gunshots, a woman screaming and the noise of someone fleeing the scene in a vehicle.

Officers surveying the scene reportedly saw evidence of forced entry and found Cox in a bedroom suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in her body.

She was treated at the scene, but succumbed to her injuries before she could be transported to the hospital, according to police.

Her university released the following statement:

Huston-Tillotson University mourns the tragic loss of our graduating senior, Ms. Natalia Monet Cox. Born in 1999, Natalia was a biology major assiduously on the path to realizing her dream of becoming an exotic animal veterinarian. During her tenure on campus, Natalia served as acting President of the Pre-Alumni Council, Secretary of Alpha Kappa Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., sat on the Executive Board of Deeds Not Words, and held a prestigious internship with Texas Parks and Wildlife as a researcher for two years.

President Colette Pierce Burnette personally extends her deep condolences and prayers to the Cox family, “Natalia was a brilliant and spirited young woman whose rays of light illuminated and brought warmth to every individual she encountered—Natalia Monet Cox, you are forever missed.”

Austin police are investigating the case and building leads to arrest a suspect. More information is expected to be released in the coming days.
