Wynter Straw: 25-Year-Old Killed In Domestic Violence Shooting

On Sunday, March 26, 2023, Richland County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a shots fired call at an apartment complex. They found the body of 25-year-old Wynter Straw outside one of the apartment buildings.

Wynter Straw, 25, of Columbia, South Carolina, worked with the Department of Corrections as a mental health officer and was a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority who often extended those bonds of sisterhood to many of her friends as well as family members.

"A rising star, if you met her you loved her, if you hadn't met her then you wish you had," Straw's mother Lashon Williams, told local media.

A former athlete, Straw was instrumental in her basketball team’s title run some years back.

"She helped us win our first championship at Allen on the women's side, first championship they ever won and she was a part of that team, a big part of that team," Coach Jason James told TV station WACH.

On the night of Sunday, March 26, 2023, Richland County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a shots fired call. Upon arrival, they found Straw unconscious suffering from gunshot wounds outside one of the apartment buildings.

A male suspect, whom deputies believed to be armed, barricaded himself inside an apartment for more than three hours before deputies heard a single gunshot, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

When deputies entered the apartment, they found the suspect dead from a gunshot wound to the upper body.

Straw’s family members said they never suspected that something was awry in her relationship with the man who shot her.

“This man looked me in my eyes all the time and whenever I would talk to him, I’d say ‘I’m giving you my child, a whole-hearted bubbly personality and that’s how I want to get her back.’ And he always assured me he would never do anything to hurt my child,” Williams said..

Straw’s mother said her daughter had plans of going to law school. Because of the tragedy, Williams said she will now use her voice to raise awareness about domestic violence.

"This is a shame that these girls, these babies these children and these mothers have to grieve because somebody decided they want to take God into their own hands," said Williams. "It's too much, it's too much, we have to come together and figure out how we can put an end to this."
