'Mama, I've been shot:' DeArrea Haymond killed in driveway
Just a week after New Year's Day 2016, DeArrea Haymond and her boyfriend were sitting in his driveway in a south Chicago suburb when they were ambushed by a gunman who shot them multiple times.
The execution-style attack left Haymond unconscious and her boyfriend, Brendan Hudson, crawling to his doorstep.
The boyfriend's mother, Collen Hudson, told news stations that she heard a doorbell ring and went to answer it. That's when she made a terrible discovery: Her son was on the ground, clinging to life, leaking with with several bullet holes in his body. "Mama, I've been shot," he reportedly said. His girlfriend, Haymond, was dead.
“I'm feeling terrible,” Colleen Hudson told NBC Chicago. “I'm feeling so bad for that mother that lost her child. Oh my God."
Indeed, Haymond, 19, was a young mom who was trying to teach her daughter about the world -- and better understand it herself. She was about to go to school to get her General Equivalency Degree, according to reports.
Her mother, Dalena Grant, said that her granddaughter won't be able to grasp the horrible truth about her mom until she's matured.
"She was a loving person who wouldn't hurt anybody," Grant told the Chicago Tribune. "She worked hard to take care of her daughter," a 2-year-old girl.
"When she get older, we're just gonna tell her, Mommy's with the angels," Grant told NBC Chicago.
A GoFundMe has been set up by Haymond's aunt to help care for the slain woman's 2-year-old child.
