Aniya Edwards was a "loving girl with a carefree spirit, with a smile that would brighten your day," her relative told Detroit media. The 19-year-old college student was planning on enrolling in Oakland Community College. She was back in town in Pontiac this past weekend to visit her father, his only child. She left in a body bag.

The college student was standing in front of an abandoned house with three neighborhood friends on Friday, August 5, 2016, when a dark-colored car rolled up and starting firing gunshots.

There is no sign that an argument or confrontation took place, only senseless violence.

"They say a car rolled past, windows rolled down and gunfire started," Roxanne Edwards, the victim's aunt, told WDIV on camera.

Four people were shot, but Edwards was hit in the abdomen. Her injuries were so severe, police deputies -- after trying CPR -- didn't even wait for an ambulance. In an unprecedented move, they rushed her to the hospital in a patrol car. She was declared dead at the hospital.

Edwards' family told local media that the loss of their daughter was nothing less than catastrophic.

"This is a feeling we're all gonna share the rest of our lives so we're trying to do the best we can do," her father Cory Edwards told WJBK in Detroit.

"She was very generous, that was one of the greatest things about her," said her mother Nekia Taylor told the TV station.

Witnesses said the four gunmen in the car all were wearing masks. Police recovered shell casings belonging to a semi-automatic weapon, according to WDIV.

"We're all gonna be dealing with this the rest of our lives," Cory Edwards told WDIV. "This will never go away." 

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the cost of Edwards' burial. After one day, the page has raised nearly $4,000 of its $5,000 goal.

"Aniya Edwards was a bright young college student whose life was cut short when she was tragically killed by gun violence. She had no association to the shooters and was an innocent bystander," the page says.
