Amya Monserrat: 15-Year-Old Student Shot Dead At Ohio Birthday Party

Amya  Amya Monserrat was a freshman cheerleader who was notable personality at Valley Christian School in Youngstown, Ohio.

According to police, “hundreds” of young people, including some of her classmates, attended a birthday party at a restaurant on the evening of Saturday, April 15, 2023 at a home. According to law enforcement, tensions grew between two groups at the party and soon gunshots rang out.

Struck by a bullet in the melee was Amya, who died from her injuries.

The shooting has been so traumatic that Valley Christian canceled classes when the week began.

“We’re grieving,” Valley Christian president Michael Pecchia told reporters. “Amya’s not going to be sitting at her desk tomorrow, and that’s tough for kids to process. We’ve had discussions about her locker and her seat in the classroom.”

Law enforcement said that they were combing through hours of video body cam footage and video surveillance in hopes of finding out who pulled the trigger.

The shooting has raised fears of retaliation among the high school community.

Monica Jones, the high school principal at Rayen Early College High School, told WKBN that some of her students are having a hard time coping with Amya’s slaying.

“Kids are having nightmares. They’re afraid to come to school, they’re afraid that somebody thinks they know something — who did it,” she told the TV station.

Local Pastor Kenneth Donaldson told the media outlet that young people, especially girls, are taking the shooting rough.

“I talked with some young ladies today. They hadn’t eaten or slept in a few days. One girl said ‘I’m afraid to go to sleep and every time I close my eyes, I see her,'” Donaldson was quoted as saying.
