Aniyah Womack: 19-Year-Old Gunshot Victim Dies After Being Dropped Off At Jacksonville Hospital
Aniyah Womack was just days away from starting a new job in Jacksonville, Florida. Her family was looking forward to seeing her later in the day. The Jacksonville 19-year-old spoke to her grandmother on Wednesday, May 24, 2023. Hours later, they would receive devastating news.
“She said that she was going to be home today. So that’s what we were waiting on for her to come home,” her grandmother, Gail Taylor, told Jacksonville’s Channel 4 News.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said that later that evening, Womack was dropped off at an area hospital with a gunshot wound. She would later die at the hospital following emergency surgery.
Law enforcement officials have not been able to determine whether the two people who dropped her off – a man and a woman – are Good Samaritans or suspects. Police – as well as family members – have a lot of questions for the individuals.
“We want to know where her stuff is, where she is, where are her friends that were hanging out with her?” Autumn Redding, Womack’s Cousin, told local media. “Any accident, you stay by their side, you follow through. This wasn’t that.”
As law enforcement continues its investigation, Womack’s family is asking for the public’s help as well.
"We need the community, and we need the person watching this to know... turn yourself in or call the anonymous tip line," said Autumn Redding, cousin.
Anyone with information related to this incident is encouraged to contact the sheriff's office at 904-630-0500 or call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 866-845-TIPS.
A GoFundMe set up by Womack’s family reads:
Aniyah Womack was loved by so many and will be truly missed. She was a social butterfly, lighting up the room wherever she was.
On 5/24/2023, she was murdered at the age of 19 with still so much life to be lived. There are still many unknown factors and an ongoing investigation by local detectives. While we don't know all the details surrounding her death, what we do know was she was brought to the hospital by 2 anonymous people with a gunshot wound. The family had spoken with her earlier in the day, and she informed everyone that she was with friends and would be returning home soon. Unfortunately, the hospital was unable to save her life after hours of surgery.
This unexpected tragedy has the family not only wondering why she was taken so soon but also how we can remember her for who she was and not by what happened. Aniyah was recently saved and accepted Christ in her life. She matured to not only start a new job but obtain her 1st apartment. 30 days before her passing as a family, she discussed her last wishes and the planning of her final farewell never expecting it to be so soon.
As unexpectedly this tragic incident occurred, we would like to fulfill her wishes and we are asking for the help of the community. Any amount given will contribute to our overall goal and will be greatly appreciated.
A mother never plans to bury a child and it can be one of the hardest things to do in parenthood. All funds received will be used to cover ALL funeral and medical expenses. Please help us out with a contribution to provide her with the BEST final farewell during such a hurtful time.
