Christina Winters: Kansas City Wife Shot Dead In Domestic Abuse Case
Christina Winters, 36, was shot dead in the parking lot of the Kansas City Police Department on Wednesday, May 19, 2022. The shooting apparently was witnessed by her 4-year-old niece, who was unharmed.
The family of Christina Winters, 36, wants her maiden name used when referencing the woman, who was a fatal victim of domestic abuse.
Winters was a loving wife who was doing what she could to withstand a tumultuous eight-year marriage, her family says.
According to the victim’s mother, Laverna Winters, her son-in-law dealt with mental health issues compounded by substance abuse. Through it all, his wife stood by him, even when things got violent.
“Every time he get high and drunk, she tried to survive and help him," Laverna told TV station KSHB. "But he didn't appreciate none of that apparently, because he ended up killing her anyway."
On Wednesday, May 19, 2022, Winters’ husband began to act up again, family members said.
"He was shooting in the air, [so] she took him to be evaluated by the state, they kept him for like two hours and released them," Benson Winters, Christina’s brother, told the local media.
Next, Winters took him to the local police department, which she had gone before.
"But I guess this time he wasn't going quietly, so he had the gun and he was like, he told her that if he couldn't have her, nobody would," Tasha Winters, Christina’s cousin, was quoted as saying.
Winters was shot dead in the parking lot, a shooting apparently witnessed by her 4-year-old niece who was in the backseat, according to TV station Fox 4.
When officers came outside after hearing the gunfire, they found Winters dead in the car, which had crashed in the parking lot.
Elliott Nevels, 34, has been arrested and is facing several criminal charges, including second-degree murder, armed criminal action and endangering the welfare of a child.
The family has a message to all those involved in violent relationships: “The first time he threatens you and tell you he’s gonna kill you, believe it,” Christina’s mother, Laverna Winters, said.
