Shaleka Spoon: 36-year-old mother of 3 killed by husband in Walmart parking lot murder-suicide
Shaleka Spoon had just pulled into work in the wee hours of Sunday morning. She was well loved at her place of work, Walmart in East Point, Georgia.
She was also well known where ever she went: be it the sheriff's office, where she used to work or around her friends.
“She was overall an amazing person to be around,” friend Britney Butler told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “You could talk to her about anything.”
Spoon was a 36-year-old mother of three and a former Fulton County sheriff’s deputy. She would think nothing of getting in her car and traveling 20 minutes from her Fairburn home to take care of her kids.
"She was a beautiful spirit and a great mother," her cousin Ginger Bryant told the AJC. "I don't know how this happened."
But it happened. The worst thing. Happened.
Poice said 39-year-old Christopher Bernard Jones, who was reportedly her husband, shot Spoon in the parking lot, then turned the gun on himself.
Bryant told the AJC that Bryant and Spoon were longtime lovers and the parents of their three kids.
The murder-suicide was still being attended to Sunday morning when shoppers began arriving to the store at 7 a.m. Yellow police tape cordoned off a portion of the parking lot.
Co-workers, upon learning of Spoon's death, burst in tears.
Spoon was studying criminal justice locally and was due to graduate in six months. She leaves behind one son and two daughters, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
