Paramedics scramble on Friday, September 2, 2016 after a gunman shot two school girls in Wichita Falls. Police are searching for a white male about age 18 in the attack.

In a shocking attack in broad daylight Friday afternoon, two school girls were shot by a gunman in an alley in Wichita Falls. The students -- one of which died and the other gravely wounded -- attended school at McNiel Middle School.

Police said that one child is dead and another is injured in the shooting, according to the Wichita Falls Times Record News.

“It’s very tragic and heartbreaking that this involved two young people,” Wichita Falls Police Chief Manuel Borrego told reporters, the Times Record reports.

“We’re going to work this until this is resolved,” he vowed.

Wichita Falls Independent School District Superintendent Michael Kuhrt said in a statement: "Today after school there was a tragic off-campus situation involving two girls from McNiel Middle School. I am saddened to report that one of those girls passed away and the other is in guarded condition."

He went on to say: "Please know that the district is coordinating efforts to provide grief counselors for students ... As a district, we are saddened by this senseless act of violence and our thoughts and prayers are with all of those involved."

Police described the suspect as a white, possibly an older teenager. He may be in a black truck and is considered armed and dangerous.

The initial reward of $2,500 for information leading to the suspect's capture was matched within hours of its announcement, meaning that the total stands at $5,000.
