JaNae Owens: 17-Year-Old Gunned Down On Suburban Atlanta Street
On a suburban Atlanta road, JaNae Owens was a 17-year-old girl in the safest place she could possibly be: In the presence of her mother. She had just moved to Atlanta from Shreveport, Louisiana and was excited about living in the city.
But while she was riding in a red Nissan with Louisiana license plate, authorities said, bullets pierced through her car, striking her and her mother.
The deadly shooting happened about 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2018. JaNae and her mother were rushed to the hospital, where the girl was pronounced dead.
On Saturday, Decatur police announced the arrest of 50-year-old Simmie R. Reed.
"We believe that he killed somebody so to get somebody off the streets like that is huge for us," Decatur Police's Sgt. John Bender told reporters, according to Fox 5 Atlanta. "Now we can bring some closure to Janae Owen's family."
He was booked into the DeKalb County Jail and charged with one count of murder, two counts of aggravated assault with intent to murder, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
