Chatéri Payne: Young Mother And Louisiana Police Officer Shot Dead; 3 Arrested
Chatéri Payne was looking forward to a long career in the justice system. The young mother had just become a Louisiana state police officer in Shreveport in November 2018.
While preparing to start her midnight shift, Payne was shot multiple times outside a home in that city. on Wednesday, January 9, 2019.
Shreveport Police Chief Ben Raymond said a minor was at the home at the time of the shooting but would not confirm a relationship.
"There was a child located at the residence," Raymond told reporters. "We do not know what the child may or may not have been witness to."
Payne joined the force officially last fall after being hired as an academy cadet in July.
Police have been relatively mum about the suspect or suspects.
"Since we're not sure exactly who the suspect is at this point, or suspects, we're going to assume that there's possibly suspects at large that could be armed," Raymond said.
Police later arrested Glenn Frierson, 38, Trevon Anderson, 26, and Lawrence Pierre, 22, in the slaying and charged them with second-degree murder
The Shreveport Police Officer’s Association released the following statement:
“The Shreveport Police Officers Association would like to thank the Citizens of Shreveport for their prayers and their genuine sympathy shown to us at this critical time. We have lost one of our own. She was young, and she was beautiful. She was proving herself to be a capable professional, dedicated to serving the Citizens of Shreveport. We lift her family in prayer, and we thank you for allowing her to be a part of us. We stand ready to assist her family and her Academy Class.”
Two days after Payne’s slaying, another rookie female police officer, Natalie Corona, 22, was shot multiple times when she stopped on a Davis, North Carolina street to assist a car crash. A gunman on a bike rode by and sprayed her with bullets.
The local police chief said the shooting had the hallmark of an ambush. Police made an arrest in that case.
