Dr. Calendra Green: Detroit-Area Public Health Offical Killed In Murder-Suicide
Friends and colleagues of Dr. Calendra Green said she took her job as one of Oakland County's top public health officials seriously, but she always made time for levity and fun.
The married 52-year-old, who was a staunch advocate for vulnerable communities, was found dead Thursday, May 11, 2023 in what county officials are calling a murder- suicide after her husband’s body was also found in the couple’s Pontiac, Michigan home.
“She was just always the first to volunteer, to raise her hand, step in and lead by example. And her staff is devastated,” Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter told reporters.
When she was appointed, Dr. Green was the first woman of color to serve as Oakland County's health officer. Coulter called her "a light to all who had the privilege to know and love her.”
“A terrible and tragic situation that we seem to see more often these days,” Sheriff Michael Bouchard said in a statement. “It’s hard to understand how someone that professes his love for another person can at some point commit such violence on them. Our prayers are with all those affected by this horrific loss.”
