Caryn Brown: 27-Year-Old Mother Shot Dead Outside Maryland Apartment; Ex Arrested
Caryn Faye Brown, 27, of Federalsburg, Maryland, was trying to end a tumultuous four-year relationship that had run its course. Things had gotten nasty. Children were involved. Violence had erupted. She was looking for a change.
Early Monday, September 4, 2023 – Labor Day – outside of her apartment complex, Brown was gunned down in cold blood.
“This was a very targeted, intentional act,” Federalsburg Police Chief Michael McDermott told reporters. “[The gunman] intended to do exactly what he did it; was very up close and personal.”
Law enforcement immediately suspected Brown’s former boyfriend, who had been involved in a disagreement with her just two weeks earlier in which police were called.
“When the incident happened on August 20th, there was no injury to our victim,” Federalsburg Police Chief Michael McDermott told reporters. “At the time, she was not injured; he didn’t have a firearm, he just got away as quickly as he could, before law enforcement was able to put a net around him.”
This time, the ex-boyfriend, 26-year-old Quandre Lee Winder, was found and arrested by police. Winder, the father of two of Brown’s children, had fled Maryland and was apprehended in Delaware, according to media reports.
“She didn’t want to have any further contact with him, and he made it quite clear that that was not what he was willing to accept,” Chief McDermott said, according to TV station WMDT. “I don’t believe that she felt like it would result in this.”
A GoFundMe set up by Brown’s honorary aunt says:
In the early morning hours of Monday, September 4th, tragedy struck this beautiful little family and within the span of 15 minutes a senseless act of vengeful violence stole another beautiful light from our world.
Caryn Faye had just entered a Renaissance period of her life: at the age of 27, with the help of her family and friends, she had finally escaped the terror of a 4 year long relationship where she suffered brutally at the hands of the father of her two younger children. She grew stronger every day. Renting her own space, Caryn worked a full-time job with coworkers she truly enjoyed, and was able to care for her babies in the way she'd always wanted. The glimmer of hope she saw for her future was slowly getting brighter with every achievement and she had been coming back into herself.
Caryn Faye had also found the courage within herself to report her abuser and take the necessary legal steps to protect herself and her eight, seven, three, and two year old chidren. All for naught.”
