Charon Mayo: Mother, 52, Fatally Shot In Bed In Arizona; Husband Charged
Charon Mayo, a 52-year-old wife, had been arguing with her husband for some time before things escalated in their Buckeye, Arizona, home.
In the early hours of Tuesday, January 17, 2023, 54-year-old Hercelyn Mayo, reportedly walked into the police station and confessed to shooting his wife after an argument.
When local police arrived at the Mayo home, they found the body of
Charon Mayo in bed with multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Investigators later learned Hercelyn had left the scene shortly after the shooting and drove to a relative's home before going to the police department to report the incident," police told TV station Fox 10.
During an interview with police, Hercelyn said that he and his wife had been arguing for days after she told him that she wanted a divorce. He also claimed that Charon’s pistol was missing from its usual place on the nightstand.
He told law enforcement that as he was exiting the bedroom, he saw her reach for something.
"[Hercelyn] said seeing this he fired his gun once or twice from the doorway," according to court documents obtained by the TV station.
His account doesn’t jibe with what detectives have been able to unearth. They said that “blood spatter on Herceyln's shirt indicates that he was closer to his wife when he opened fire,” the report reads. Also, shell casings were not found in the hallway and his wife’s "wound appeared to be caused from a close shot."
"The victim was laying on her side and was under the comforter and sheets of the bed as if she was asleep or preparing to go to sleep," court documents read.
Hercelyn was taken into custody and is now facing a charge of first-degree murder. His bond has been set at $1 million, according to jail records.
