Christina Nance: Woman Found Dead Inside Police Van In Huntsville, Alabama
Famiily members describe Christina Nance as a “very fun-loving person, who was very positive and very sweet.”
Mystery continues to surround the death of Nance, whose body was found in an unused police van on October 7, 2021, in Huntsville, Alabama.
According to Huntsville Deputy Police Chief DeWayne McCarver, Nance’s body was discovered by a police officer in the police department parking lot.
"The officer noticed shoes next to the van and approached, discovering Ms. Nance's body inside. Windows on the van were observed to be opened and on this type of van they popped outward," he told reporters at a news conference.
But Nance’s family is not satisfied with the narrative the police have put forth. For one, there are still too many unanswered questions.
Much of what is known about Nance’s death has been surmised from a grainy security camera video.
The video that the police purport to show footage of Nance only shows her in the parking lot — not what happened to her and certainly not how she died.
According to police, Nance is first captured in video on September 25 lying in the bushes and then sitting on the hood of a patrol car. On September 28, the woman can be seen getting into the van, according to McCarver.
Once the door is closed, the van cannot be opened from the outside.
The family also say the video that the police released to the public is different from the one they were shown. Even still, they are yet to receive a copy of what s purported to be Nance’s last moments alive.
“It doesn’t add up. I'm not buying it and we won't. We [will] push for my sister,” her sister, Latausha Nance, told FOX 54.
Police say the security video shows Ms. Nance entered the unlocked police van through the rear door and movement in the van through Tuesday, Sept. 28. The van, which was formerly used to transport prisoners, cannot be opened from the inside. Ms. Nance was reported missing by her family on Saturday, Oct. 2.
"We are still unsure of how our sister, Christina Nance, died in the van. That was not stated or pointed out in the video. All the video shown was Christina entering the van," says Whitney Nance, another one of Christina’s sisters.
"And we didn't see that. Between the three of them, they don't think that's their sister," added cousin Frank James Matthews, III.
"We do not believe that our sister would just randomly walk to a van and climb in it. First of all, why wasn't the van locked on police property?" Whitney told WAFF TV.
Both the police department and the state medical examiner have already said there are no signs of foul play in Nance’s death, and the medical examiner said the cause of death will be announced after further testing, including a toxicology report, has been completed.
