Eunice Dwumfour: New Jersey Councilwoman Found Shot Dead In Car

On Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2023, Eunice Dwumfour, a New Jersey Councilwoman, was shot dead in her residential neighborhood, according to law enforcement. Police have yet to name a suspect or motive.

Eunice Dwumfour, 30, was a recently married mother and Republican councilwoman in the borough of Sayreville, New Jersey, who was originally from Newark.

On Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2023, Dwumfour was shot dead in her residential neighborhood, according to law enforcement. Local police said they have reason to believe her white Nissan SUV traveled about 100 feet before coming to a stop. She was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds just before 7:30 p.m., according to police.

She reportedly got married to a pastor in Nigeria a short while ago, although authorities have not divulged whether they think that had anything to do with her slaying.

"She was happy with her new husband. It seems. Happy with her daughter, and she was living the life, the American dream. She was a beautiful motivated person, who did very well in the community," Dwumfour's former campaign manager Karen Bailey Bebert said.

Dwumfour was in the midst of finishing her first three-year term after being elected in 2021.

“She was a 30-year-old woman. To have this happen in such a tragic way, I mean, our hearts are just broken and everybody wants an answer,” Bebert went on to say. “So we’re waiting with bated breath.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation recently announced that it had joined the murder case.

"We are aware of the investigation into the death of Councilwoman Dwumfour, in Sayreville Wednesday evening. We have talked with our local law enforcement partners at the Sayreville Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office. Should they ask us for any assistance, we will do all we can to help their investigation," the FBI said in a statement.

Eunice Dwumfour, a Republican councilwoman, was found by police with multiple gunshot wounds just after 7 p.m. Wednesday and was pronounced dead on scene, according to Middlesex County officials.

Sayreville Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick said Dwumfour was a devout Christian woman who handled herself with composure and class.

“Beyond her dedication to our community, I can share that she was a woman of deep faith and worked hard to integrate her strong Christian beliefs into her daily life as a person and a community leader,” the mayor said. “On a personal note, I can’t adequately express my feeling of sorrow at the loss of a friend.”

Officials are continuing their investigation but do not have a motive or suspect at this time.
