LaShanda Shumpert: Milwaukee Grandmother Gunned Down at Front Door
LaShanda Shumpert, 47, was a mother to six and a grandmother to 18 kids. She was on the phone with her daughter when she was shot and killed at her front door in the middle of the night.
The murder happened the morning of Tuesday, June 25, 2024 in a Milwaukee neighborhood. Some of the victim’s grandchildren were reportedly inside the home, but all are safe.
"My granddaughter called me at 3:00 this morning, screaming and all. And I could understand what she was saying. … ‘Somebody shot my mom,’” Maeleen Dilworth-Jordan, Shumpert's mother told WISN 12 News, quoting her granddaughter. “So I didn't come to my car, came down here.”
Detectives have launched an investigation and are still piecing together exactly what happened.
"To my knowledge, she was on the porch. Somebody knocked at the door,” the victim’s mother told WISN 12 News. “I think she opened the door and got shot. And we have no idea. You know, she's a mom. She's a grandmother. She doesn't go nowhere, she doesn't bother anybody. So we don't know.”
Milwaukee police arrived on the scene around 3:30 a.m. and enlisted emergency staff, who tried to save her life, but couldn’t.
The victim’s father said that his daughter enjoyed having a good time.
"Oh, she was fun,” Waymon Shumpert told the TV station. “She could could sing. She was a fun daughter. She was my oldest baby. She was really fun.”
Milwaukee police continue to hunt for the murderer who would take a grandmother.
