Margaret Mbitu: 31-Year-Old Massachusetts Woman Stabbed To Death At Airport

Margaret Mbitu: 31-Year-Old Massachusetts Woman Stabbed To Death At Airport

Margaret "Maggie" Mbitu, 31, of Whitman, Massachusetts was found stabbed to death in a parking garage outside Logan Airport. Her boyfriend, who boarded a flight to Kenya, is wanted for murder.

As a nurse, 31-year-old Margaret "Maggie" Mbitu of Whitman, Massachusetts, dedicated her life to helping others.

Mbitu was last seen leaving her job at BAMSI, where she worked for in group homes helping people with disabilities.

“She was warm, caring, and loved by everyone she worked with, both staff and the people she cared for in our group homes. As an agency, we are in mourning over the loss of such an amazing young (woman)," executive vice president Ulea Grace Lago said in a statement.

Mbitu went missing on Monday, October 30, 2023 and authorities were notified a day later. State law enforcement said her body was found at about 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 1 inside a vehicle at a Logan Airport parking garage.

According to MassLive, detectives discovered “a large amount of blood inside the vehicle.” And Mbitu’s body “was showing obvious signs of death.”

Upon further examination, “large slash wounds observed to her face and neck area (under her chin) and a puncture wound to her side,” investigators said in court documents obtained by MassLive.

Law enforcement has identified 40-year-old Kevin Kangethe, 40, of Lowell, Massachusetts as the suspect in the case.

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police said in a joint statement that, “The investigation into the facts and circumstances of the homicide are ongoing. The investigation indicates that Kangethe  and Ms. Mbitu knew each other and that the homicide was not a random act.”

Kangthe purchased airline tickets to leave America for Kenya on Oct. 31, and was caught on surveillance cameras leaving the parking garage where Mbitu’s body was found.

Massachusetts State Police are working with Kenyan authorities to locate Kangthe to have him arrested and extradited back to the United States.

At a vigil for the victim, friends and family remembered Mbitu as a loving soul who cared about others.

"Maggie was a ray of sunshine in everybody's life that she came across with: her friend, family, co-workers, schoolmates, everybody that she came into contact with," Virginia Ndungu, a cousin of Mbitu, said at the gathering, according to WCVB TV. "She changed their lives. They loved her. No one has anything bad to say about Maggie."

A GoFundMe set up in the victim’s behalf says, “It’s impossible to describe the impact she had on everyone during her lifetime or quantify the number of lives she touched. She was a kind, selfless, compassionate nurse that was loved by many.”
