Destiny Danielle Washington was a student at the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) studying to help people. The 20-year-old nursing student was shot dead on the UAB campus about 9:45 p.m. on Thursday, December 16, 2020.

Local police confirmed that Washington of Trussville, Alabama, was shot inside a vehicle while in the parking lot of Hill University Center in the 1400 block of University Blvd.

The university said in a statement that they have reason to believe that Washington was killed while meeting someone to buy some Airpods, according to WBRC.

“Because this is an ongoing investigation, and out of respect for the victim and her family, we are not sharing additional information at this time. However, we will when it is appropriate. In the meantime, please keep the victim and her family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.”

UAB said in a statement that, “We are devastated that tragedy hit the UAB family overnight when a student lost her life after being shot in the parking lot outside the Hill Student Center. Police believe this occurred during a meeting arranged to sell headphones,” UAB said in a statement .

Washington graduated two years ago from Clay-Chalkville High School where she played volleyball and basketball.

Clay-Chalkville principal Michael Lee told Al.com that ,“She was outstanding. The thing I remember most about Destiny was her smile. She was a sweet, sweet soul.”

“We love all of our students,’' he was quoted as saying, “but she was one of those special ones.”

The victim’s sister, Brandee Crenshaw, told the Trussville Tribune that Washington was on her way to being a Registered Nurse.

“My sister was a smart, beautiful Black queen,” Crenshaw said. “She was about to be a certified RN in May 2021. Destiny loved her family more than anything & her nephew Arion the most. My sister was the most helpful & outgoing person you would meet. She was sweet as pie & didn’t bother anyone.”
