This is why.

The news stories we read are oftentimes discarded and pushed aside by the 24-hour news cycle. But we refuse to throw these people away. These are real people. Here are their stories.

Tamika Richards: New York Mother Of 6 Killed In Hit-And-Run

Tamika Richards, a mother of six children, was struck by a hit-and-run driver on a street on New York's Coney Island bout 9 p.m. on Friday, March 3, 2023. She died from her injuries.

Tamika Richards, a mother of six children, tried to shield one of her sons from a reckless driver barreling down a street on New York's Coney Island bout 9 p.m. on Friday, March 3, 2023. Both she and her son, Ray-Quan Parker, 18, were still hit by the vehicle, but Richards was killed by the impact. The driver sped off.

Richards' son, whom she saved, remains hospitalized and doesn't know that his mother was killed, family told local media.

"They took my mother, my younger sisters have to grow up without a parent now," Shatalyah Parker, the victim's oldest daughter, told WABC TV. "Just turn yourself in. You hurt a lot of people.

"I want to know who killed my sister," Donnell Folks told the TV station.

The family has set up a GoFundMe to help defray funeral costs. Here's what it says:

We’ve lost our beloved Tamika Ashika Richards on Friday, March 3, 2023 sometime after 9 o’clock that night due to a hit-and-run accident. She was a mother of 6 children and one grandson. She was the oldest out of 8 siblings (Shantel Richards, Shareafer Richards, Shaquana Folks, Shavonna Folks, LaShawn Folks, Donald Folks Jr. and Donnell Folks). She also leaves behind her surviving parent, Donald Folks Sr. and her stepmother, Debbie Folks, a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, and an array of friends, neighbors, colleagues, and people that knew her or knew of her.

She’s ALWAYS looked out for everyone in her family, around the neighborhood, anyone that she came across, and she always had her children as her #1  PRIORITY.

With that being said, we ask that everyone please keep my nephew, Ray-Quan Parker, in prayers as he is still in stable condition in the hospital, and he’s trying to recover from his injuries.

Any token of donation that anyone can give to help support the kids and the funeral at this time will be greatly appreciated and humbled.

Police are looking for the driver of a red truck last seen fleeing the area.
