Zaiylah Bronson: Body Of 19-Year-Old Pregnant Wichita State Student Found In Trunk
Zaiylah Bronson, a student at Wichita State University in Kansas, was studying to become a math teacher, according to her mother. Zaiylah was 19 years old and 16.5 weeks pregnant. Full of hope, she had just learned of the gender of her child and was looking forward to being a mother.
Her mother, Zaronza Brunson, told local TV station KAKE that they had talked recently about he pregnancy and what to expect in the months ahead.
“She had just found out that she was having a boy," Zaronza told KAKE. "And of course, we had that conversation. We even had a separate conversation on what she was naming it. And she would not tell me the baby's name, she said no Mom, it's a surprise,” said Bronson.
But bad news soon followed that mother-daughter conversation.
The body of Zaiylah Bronson was found in the trunk of a car on Saturday, August 26, 2023, outside an apartment complex.
“I just fell to the floor,” said Zaronza Brunson of that fateful day.
Officers took her out of the trunk and performed life-saving measures but were unable. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Wichita Police Department arrested Alexander Lewis, 22, on charges of first and second-degree murder for the deaths of Brunson and an unborn male child. It was in the trunk of his vehicle that Brunson's body was found in.
Detectives began to suspect Lewis after they received a phone call from one of Lewis’ family members in North Carolina stating that he may have harmed her. Lewis and Bronson had been in a relationship.
Detectives said Bronson lost her life due to domestic violence.
Friends and family of Bronson have started a GoFundMe to help with funeral costs.
Brunson was a “vibrant soul with dreams, aspirations, and love to share, Zaiylah was unexpectedly and tragically taken from us as a result of domestic violence,” the GoFundMe reads.
