Breonna Patterson: 20-Year-Old Mother Shot Dead In Her Newport News Apartment

Breonna Patterson, 20, was found dead in her apartment August 29, 2018 from multiple gunshot wounds in Newport News, Virginia. Police have no suspects.

Breonna Patterson was just 20 years old, but she was a strong-willed woman willing to do what it took to provide for your young daughter.

She moved into an apartment in the Newmarket section of Newport News, Virginia. “She was just quiet.  She was a girl walking around. That’s it," a neighbor told WAVY-TV about Patterson. "Every time I came out here I would see her walking about. That’s about it.”

In the early morning hours of August 29, 2018, Patterson was at her apartment when a gunman entered her place and shots rang out. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots around 4 a.m.

Responding officers were called to the scene to answer the shots fired call. That's when the tragedy unfolded.

“We checked the door, and it was open. We went in to make sure everyone was safe," Police Chief Steve Drew told the TV station. "They did find an African-American woman deceased with shell casings … those patrolling were familiar with the address, we’ve been here before.

Drew told reporters that officers had been to the apartment address before, but he did not elaborate.

It is unclear whether Patterson's baby daughter was in the apartment at the time of the shooting.

“That was the first thing I thought about was the baby because now you have an infant child, a year old, that’s gonna grow up without a mother," Assistant Community Manager Stephanie Beale told WTKR.
