Courtney Cox: 31-Year-Old Lawyer Gunned Down In Atlanta Apartment
Courtney Cox, 31, was a professional woman who worked as a lawyer for an Atlanta law firm.
Over the summer, she began a relationship with a man, according to news reports.
Police say on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, Jarvis Jarrette, 32, shot and killed Cox inside a Midtown Atlanta apartment complex.
The shooting occurred sometime around 3 a.m.
"It appears that the suspect was inside the apartment," Deputy Chief Charles Hampton told reporters a day later. "There was no forced entry or anything like that."
After law enforcement responded on the scene, Jarrette inexplicably began to fire his rifle at first responders from the 21st floor balcony, police said.
The incident sparked panic among the apartment dwellers as reported shots fired and recorded the incident on social media.
At a subsequent news conference, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms acknowledged that instead of calling 911 many people shared the scene on social media.
'We did start receiving phone calls but social media received information, and has received more information, quite frankly, than we have received through our 911 center," she said.
'So for us to be able to appropriately respond and assess, we just ask if you can put down your camera, put down your phone, call 911 and then allow us to do what we do.," she added.
Police Chief Rodney Bryant said authorities ultimately were able to interact with Jarrett from the use of drone footage.
Cox's body was later found by officers inside the apartment. Jerrette's body was found on the balcony, according to CBS46.
Police have not released the nature of Cox's relationship with Jarrett.
Paul Hastings Law Firm, where Cox worked since 2016, released the following statement:
"Courtney was a dear friend and colleague to our personnel here in Atlanta and throughout the Firm. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy, and we are focused on supporting Courtney’s family and one another through this difficult time."
