D'Asia Johnson: 22-Year-Old Found Chopped Up In Suitcases In New York
D’Asia Johnson was trying to get her young life together by moving on from an abusive relationship. The 22-year-old had plans of becoming a teacher and helping people, according to her aunt.
“D’Asia was a loving, full of life girl. She was working [at Macy’s], she wanted to finish school. She wanted to be a teacher,” the aunt told The New York Post.
“She was in school, she was working. She was well loved,” her aunt went on to say. “It’s just sad that her life was unfortunately cut short.”
A macabre murder mystery has unfolded in Brooklyn, New York as authorities investigate Johnson’s slaying.
Police responding to call about a strange odor coming from Johnson’s sixth-floor apartment found two suitcases containing human remains.
New York law enforcement has identified the body parts as belonging to Johnson, who reportedly had not been seen in about a month.
There are many unanswered questions in the case, but NYPD officials have confirmed that they are looking for a male suspect.
The apartment building housed victims of domestic violence and those enduring mental health crises, according to local media.
The case came to their attention when building security for the Brooklyn apartment where Johnson lived tried to do a welfare check in her on Wednesday, September 21, 2022.
Johnson’s aunt told the Post that it was she who initiated the welfare check, after she repeated called her niece but couldn’t reach her.
The security guard that knocked on Johnson’s door was reportedly greeted by a man presumed to be Johnson’s boyfriend. He wouldn’t let the guards inside, according to news reports.
The guard smelled a foul odor and went downstairs to call the police. That’s when he saw the man as well as another man leaving the apartment building with a duffel bag.
When police officers entered the apartment they saw a grisly scene: Among the things they found were blood stains on the floor and a meat clever.
“It was like something in a movie,” building resident, Stephanie Harris, told local TV station New York 7.
“Not something you see in real life. Blood everywhere, it was nasty. You could imagine what happened to her. She fought for her life, cause there was blood like splattered.”
NYPD authorities have also confirmed that Johnson had an active restraining order against a man she had been romantically involved with.
Neighbors have come forward to say that the man used to live with Johnson in the apartment.
One neighbor of Johnson’s told NBC New York that he would often hear a ruckus coming from her apartment.
"A lot of fighting. Arguing, like I said," said the neighbor who only gave his first name, Jeremy. "You hear arguing, banging, loud stuff, regular stuff. But you can't — like I said, if you try to interrupt and stuff, you’re putting yourself in a problem you can’t solve."
Johnson’s aunt, who declined to provide her name to the media, blames apartment security for Johnson’s slaying.
“They dropped the ball here,” She said, referring to the apartment. “ They know their tenants. They opened the door for him,” the aunt added. “She didn’t have no other boyfriend. They didn’t do enough. They could have prevented him from coming in there… They’re security, they’re trained to put somebody down. There is ways to stop him from coming in.”
No arrests have been made in the case. Police say it remains a "very active" investigation.
“We want justice for Dasia. We want this boy found,” the victim’s aunt told the New York Post. “That is why we are asking to put his picture out to the public. The public needs to be made aware of who he is. That’s why he’s so hard to pinpoint, nobody has his picture.”
