Ranel Marshall: 21-Year-Old Gunned Down In Washington, D.C.; Killer At Large
Ranel “Rae” Marshall had big plans the afternoon of Tuesday, June 29, 2021. The Falls Church, Virginia 21-year-old was planning to scoop up a friend to go to the movies.
“I would describe her as the most outgoing, goofy, beautiful person I know,” her cousin, Jamia Denny, told Fox 5 D.C.
While she was waiting in a car alongside a road in southeast Washington, D.C., a vehicle pulled up and began shooting inexplicably. Marshall was rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound.
She fought valiantly for her life, but on Sunday, July 4, she succumbed to their injuries. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Marshall’s mother says her daughter was a well-rounded woman with many interests and talents. ““She went to the rec center after school for their after school and their summer program,” she told NBC News. “She played lacrosse and she did cheerleading here at the rec center. She played lacrosse for Falls Church city and her high school.”
Rae Marshall was planning on going to art school later this year as well, she said.
Since the shooting, her family has been fighting to learn more about the shooting, which the authorities have deemed random.
"I can’t describe it. I can’t," ArLita Marshall. "She’s my oldest and my only daughter."
D.C. police continue to search for the killer and also look for answers in the murder. Was the shooting a targeted attack? Was it a stray bullet or a case of mistaken identity?
The family say they won’t rest until justice is served.
“They don’t even know what they took from us,” a relative told Fox 5, referring to the killer. “We just didn’t get enough time with her. We were supposed to grow old together.”
“This is a pain that you can’t describe that ‘s never going away. You broke my family up,” the victim’s mother told the TV station.
