Orlando Police Sgt. Debra Clayton was fatally shot on January 8, 2017 when she confronted a man wanted in the slaying of Sade Dixon.

Mesha Caldwell was found dead on the side of the road in Madison County, Mississippi on Wednesday, January 4, 2017. She is the first transgender murder reported in 2017.

Julia McTure, 47, was found not breathing on December 31, 2016 by her 9-year-old grandson  in their Atlanta apartment. Police believe that she had been raped and strangled.

Cherish Williams, a senior at Mundy's Mill High School in Jonesboro, Georgia, was gunned down in a park on December 31, 2016. Clayton County police are looking for three black males.

Keiana Herndon, 26, of Camden, Arkansas died while recording herself on Facebook Live on Dec. 28, 2016. She was holding her 1-year-old son.

Alaysia Bennett, 19, died from multiple gunshot wounds after she and three of her friends sitting in a parked car in Springfield, Illinois, were ambushed by a gunman. Police have no suspects or motives in the Dec. 19, 2016 attack.

Black women have been targets in 2016. Killed in an assortment of ways -- police shootings, domestic stabbings and errant bullets -- the result has been the same: The tragic end to a woman's life.

Here are some of the women who have been killed this year in what all can agree could have been wholly preventable deaths.

Sade Dixon, 23, was shot to death at close range on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2016 by her ex-boyfriend, according to Orlando, Florida police. She was three months pregnant. Her brother was wounded in the attack. 

Shakeka Spoon, 36, was shot to death by her husband in a murder-suicide early Sunday morning on Dec. 11, 2016 in the parking lot of her job, Walmart. She leaves behind three kids.

Cierra Ford, a 25-year-old Clark Atlanta University student, was found shot to death in her Sandy Springs, Georgia, apartment on November 25, 2016. Police have arrested three suspects.

Mania Meneide, 44, was allegedly stabbed to death by her son in their Brockton, Massachussetts home on 11/30/16. Frantz Polynice, 18, has pleaded not guilty to the crime.

Kendra La Sheka Lewis, 27, was shot in the face and later died at a hospital in Orlando, Florida when she was hit by a stray bullet on 12/6/16 while driving. Her 5-year-old daughter was in the backseat and unharmed. Police are looking for the shooters.

Washington, D.C. police have determined that the death of Ummi Najma Al-Thaqib, 59, was strangled to death. Her body was found in her car on October 26, 2016 outside some apartments.

Mina Ellery and three others are accused of killing of 83 year-old Dorothy Dow in August 2016 in Meriweather County. In December, Ellery posted several selfies from jail.
 

Derice Bailey, 35, was found dead on her kitchen floor in Metairie, Louisiana on 12/2/16 as deputies arrived at her home after responding to a report about a man with a gun.  Her ex-partner was arrested.

Ashley Mays, 20, the mother of a young son, was nearly 9 months pregnant with a baby girl when she was strangled to death inside a motel outside Atlanta, Georgia on 11/18/2016. Police have arrested a 24-year-old man in the slaying.

Breyona McMillian was home for the holidays in Washington, D.C., when she was shot dead on the street on 11/25/16, the day after Thanksgiving. A person of interest turned himself in on Tuesday.

Sophia Lamb, 44, of the Bronx, New York was found stabbed to death on 11/26/2016 in her apartment. Police want to talk to Andrew Curtis, her estranged husband, who is being labeled as a "person of interest."

The body of Katrina Banks, 35, was found by Henrico, Virginia police officers about 12:!5 a.m. on 11/20/16 in the basement of her home. Her husband, Alvin E. Banks, has been charged with murder after admitting the two had been arguing. 

Shanice Amerson, 21, was shot dead at a Dyersburg, Tennessee home when gunfire broke out at a 2-year-old's birthday party. Seven people were shot. Police have not made any arrests.
